Malta is a relatively small island and the public transport system lived up to its reputation. The public bus services are frequent for the majority of routes so there is no need to hire a car. In 2013 a 12 Euro 7 day bus ticket allowed unlimited travel on all the bus routes except the night buses (no need to buy another ticket when you change buses). Yes it may take a little longer to get from a to b, but the way a lot of the people drive it is by far the best and cheapest option.
The old yellow bedford buses are not in general use anymore (pity), instead they are standard type busses used in many countries.

If you enjoy a historical holiday, plan in advance where and what you want to see, most of the atractions tend to close at 4pm, as a result we did not see everything we wanted to.
